Catalans Keep Watch As Polls Close

The Catalan Independence Referendum is coming to an end with polls scheduled to close at 8pm local time (2pm EST). Though many locations were forced to close early due to extreme police violence the great majority remained open and are allowing anyone still in line by the 8pm deadline to cast their vote.

Outside the precincts voters are staying to protect the locations while ballots are being counted as they have done throughout the day. Chants of “Hem Votat” (We have voted), “Els Carrers Serán Sempre Nostres” (The streets will always be ours) can be heard as the Catalans celebrate the close of their referendum.
